Josh Gleason

Lead Vocals

Josh was born in 1976, the same year Trick of the Tail was released. Who would have thought 34 years later he would be singing Gabriel Era Genesis? Although he was quite young for this material, Josh explains that "it was my father that would be the most influential person as far as my musical talents go. As far back as I can remember it was always progressive rock that was being played in my home and vacation trips. I remember my father's record collection consisted of a variety of great music such as UK, Genesis, Rush, Yes, Zeppelin, Vangelis, The Police, Maynard Fergeson, and Bill Chase to name a few." Josh has always had much broader musical tastes than any of his friends. "I remember my 8th grade trip to Darien Lake and all the kids were listening to New Kids on the Block, Dino, Bell Biv Devoe, and I was listening to Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Genesis, and at that time lots of Jethro Tull. I also remember my father taking me to see Rush when I was in 5th grade. I thought I was so cool because the concert was on a school night."

Because his father was in bands as an accomplished jazz drummer, Josh was always well aware of music and gravitated to the stage. Although he didn’t play any instruments he used to put on his favorite records, grab a hair brush and sing his heart out into the mirror, most likely perfecting his rock moves instead of working on his voice. Many people may not know this but Josh has known Mario for about 20 years. "Even though I was younger than him, he was the guy in my school that shared the same appreciation for progressive rock as I did. In 1997 Mario and I were writing original material together when he told me about a project that would be performing The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway for a one-off show. I went down and auditioned and the rest is history. Many years later we are still together as The Waiting Room."

Playing with The Waiting Room has opened up other great opportunities for Josh. In 2005 Josh was recruited to sing for a new progressive project called K2 that featured Ken Jaquess on Bass, Ryo Okomuto on Keyboards (Spock’s Beard) and Allan Holdsworth on Guitar (UK). In March of 2010, K2 signed a record deal with Magna Carta records.

Rich DellaPietra

Keyboards, 12-string acoustic guitar, vocals

Rich is a founding member of The Waiting Room. He has been performing in bands since his days in college as a member of several classic rock bands. In the early 90's he was a member of the progressive/classic rock cover band "Pangaea" with Mike and Mario.

In 1996, he joined the internationally known Dream Theater tribute band "Images and Words" who for 6 years performed the technically challenging music of Dream Theater with great energy and accuracy. The band had a dual identity, writing and performing their own material as Eleventh Hour. They were featured on Voices: A Tribute to Dream Theater which was released by an Italian record label. The band contributed a rendition of the Dream Theater song Learning To Live as well as a demo version of an Eleventh Hour original, Inside Out.

Rich's primary musical influence has been the band Rush, ever since his first Rush concert on December 10th, 1985. "A friend of mine dragged me along to the show and it ended up changing my life. Geddy Lee was playing keyboards and being cool about it. It was a big eye-opener for me!". His primary keyboard influences are Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson, Tony Banks, Jordan Rudess, Kevin Moore, and Mark Kelly.

Accurately performing the keyboard parts from early Genesis is challenging because the keyboard sounds of Tony Banks are difficult to reproduce without using the actual instruments. Rich has spent the better part of 10 years accumulating the right combination of authentic instruments and careful reproductions.

Mike Hughes

Bass, bass pedals, 12 string acoustic and electric guitars, vocals

At an early age, Mike was encouraged to take piano lessons, but quickly rebelled against his mother's wishes. "I hated playing at recitals. I would become very nervous and eventually quit the lessons. Of course I regret it now, just don't tell my mother."

His next musical experiences came from his older brother. "I remember the sounds of Led Zeppelin's "In Through The Out Door" blasting from his bedroom. I was a quick convert and was soon rocking to Zeppelin, Sabbath, Priest, AC/DC and all the other 70's bands." He also discovered a trio from Canada called Rush, which would become a turning point in his life.

Mike continued his musical career in the early 80's. "I was inspired by Geddy Lee of Rush. I remember when "Exit...Stage Left" came out and I thought it would be great to play bass, keyboards, and sing. I asked my father for a guitar one Christmas. I quickly realized I couldn't sing and I didn't know the difference between a bass and a guitar." After a year of lessons and a couple more years of the "self-taught" method he started playing in bands, one of which included future Waiting Room members Rich and Mario.

The Rush influence also led Mike into the progressive side of rock music, bands like Pink Floyd, ELP, Yes, and Genesis. "Out of all the prog bands I was listening to at the time, Genesis interested me the most. Being a guitar player, I was always drawn to Steve Hackett's playing. I thought that his style was different from most of the guitar players I was listening to. He wasn't always out front, which appealed to me because I am a more reserved player. Hackett also didn't always just play conventional solos and fills, he made strange noises with the guitar that always caught my ear. I also liked the way that the members of Genesis seemed to compliment each others playing. They seemed to be more about the song than just who could play the best solo."

Joining The Waiting Room in 2002, Mike started out as lead guitarist playing the Steve Hackett role. In 2008, The Waiting Room parted ways with their former bass player. When the search for his replacement became challenging, Mike decided to take on the Mike Rutherford role.

Mike's musical influences currently include Steve Hackett, Bill Frisell, The Sundays, Hooverphonic, King Crimson, Sarah McLachlan, Wes Montgomery, and Allan Holdsworth.

Mario Encina

Drums

The year was 1981. Mario was a young lad, around 12 years old. Rush's Moving Pictures filled the airwaves. That's when it happened -- that's when he heard Tom Sawyer for the first time and was blown away by Neil Peart. Yes, drums it was going to be, for sure. After exhausting every Rush album and proclaiming himself "king of all air drummers," he decides to move on and test other musical waters. As a newly formed drumming fan, he would only listen to bands exhibiting great drummers: ELP, Yes, and Rush, to name just a few. But what about that singer guy in Genesis -- Phil Collins? He seems to be a decent drummer. Abacab was out during this time. Imagine Mario's surprise when he went deeper into the Genesis collection. "What? Phil wasn't the original singer?" After playing early Genesis to death around the house, his Dad bought him a very, very used 4 piece set. No more air drums!

The transition from a virtual instrument to the real thing goes well. In no time, he is playing along with his favorite tunes. Young and disillusioned, he decides to play drums for a living. Ha, what a laugh! But anyway, in the many years to come, we find our hero playing in Rush tribute bands, blues bands, rock bands, progressive rock bands, and even playing bass in a modern rock band. Currently, Mario spends his time drumming for The Waiting Room and Mesh. In his spare time, he enjoys fine wines, walks on the beach, and writing music.

As you can see, drumming has taken Mario down many roads. In the process he has met many wonderful people. Some have come and gone, and others keep coming back. Of course, we're talking about current members of The Waiting Room, Rich, Mike, and Josh, who Mario has played with at one time or another over a span of 20 years. Man, he can't shake these guys!

Chris DiStasio

Acoustic and Electric Guitars

Chris is the newest member of The Waiting Room; taking on Steve Hackett's role. Chris' musical career, so far, has included jazz, rock, funk and soul, as well as afro-cuban and eastern music. His playing style has become a fusion of all of these musical genres, and he strives to be a flexible open minded musician ready for any musical situation, live and in the studio.

Born outside of NYC, Chris seemed to be living a normal childhood until he saw video footage of Woodstock. As if seeing Hendrix and Santana wasn't enough, the vision of Pete Townsend jumping around and smashing his guitar was just what was needed to send Chris over the edge.

He received an old acoustic guitar for his 10th birthday, and smashed it quickly rendering it useless, (this boy's got promise), he pleaded for an electric guitar, and his parents reluctantly agreed, as long as he would take lessons. Big Mistake; now he was hooked, and began hanging out at the local Music Mart all the time, taking lessons, and jamming with anyone willing. After High school, he attended Five Towns College and graduated from the Jazz /Commercial Music Program. Since then, he has studied with some top jazz players, Latin musicians, and even a Sitar player from India.

Chris has been actively playing in original and cover bands since the age of 14, and has seen some moderate local, regional and even some national success. Over the years, Chris' influences have grown to be too numerous to list, and he has had the pleasure and good fortune to share the stage with a wide array of great musicians of varied musical styles and cultures.

Presently, Chris is involved in a few projects, performing and recording with local artists, but is clearly focused and very excited to be a part of this group of great musicians. He is working hard to capture Mr. Hackett’s sound and style, and is looking forward to a bright future with The Waiting Room...
